WFC 17: ‘Olimp Live & Fight’ Report
An evenly matched match up topped the bill at WFC 17: ‘Olimp Live & Fight,’ which saw a new heavyweight king crowned. The judges ruled Nandor Guelmino to be the victor after a close battle with Emil Zahariev that was mostly fought in the stand-up ranges.
The WFC welterweight belt remained in the possession of Ivica Truscek, who handed Sergei Churilov his first loss in eleven professional contests. After using the jab well, the ‘Terror’ capitalised on the fight hitting the floor, mounting his Ukranian nemesis and recording a ground and pound win.
Svetlozar Savov put on a grappling clinic against Bojan Velickovic to retain his WFC middleweight strap. Always one step ahead, the Bulgarian had an answer for any move ‘Veli’s’ moves, maintaining his unbeaten scoresheet on World Freefight Challenge events.
In his most impressive performance to date, Bor Bratovz submitted Markus Di Gallo with an arm bar in the third round. Up to this point, the ‘Playbor’ dominated with takedowns, top control and ground and pound, although his opponent showed plenty of determination throughout the battle.
Piotr Hallmann endured two knockdowns to become the new WFC lightweight champion in an action packed affair. Great heart was shown by both competitors, but a cut suffered by Vaso Bakocevic meant the bout had to be called to an end early in the second.
A masterclass of style from Uros Velicevic saw him overcome the bull-like Alija Tucak. Utilising an array of kicks, knees and punches, the Slovenian showed solid skills in all areas.
Ognjen Topalovic said he didn’t ‘give a damn’ about Denis Maksut’s grand aims on his return, and he proved this with a rip roaring showing. The Croatian dominated their middleweight collision en route to a convincing decision win.
Fitness and desire saw Austria’s Aleksandar Rakic to victory in his K-1 bout with Denis ‘Chorchyp’ Porcic. The former began strongly, but in the required extra round it was his foe that had the gas in the tank to guarantee his hand was raised.
A back and forth battle opened the show, in which Milan Zerjal imposed his ground game on Arbi Mezdihov, eventually earning a submission win 4:37 into the third with a rear naked choke.
